New Zealand Book Month Blogs

Welcome to NZ Book Month blogs. Since the original call for entries for The 2006 Six Pack we've had contributions from writers and people from the wide range of the book industry chatting about what books mean to them, what they write or think about or sometimes just about anything!

This year we've engaged Lisa Scott to blog for us through NZ Book Month 2009. Her wit and smart observations will be a treat for us as we celebrate the fourth NZ Book Month.

Enjoy!

Aroha Harris

After the excitement of recent weeks one does find it strange to return to 'normality'. Aroha, however, just spent a memorable weekend on Matiu Somes Island in Wellington Harbour. She knows that there were many opportunities to write heroic/majestic words but sometimes enjoying the moment is what it's all about.

David Geary

Days in the life of David Geary: he celebrates his birthday, does some NZ Book Month stuff – but mostly – he's a fan of Jarvis Cocker and Nick Cave – this man is my hero! Oh, Happy Birthday David [ed].

Marisa Maepu

Marisa generously mentions all her inspiration. Her fa’afetai (thanks) are extended to family, friends, community but she also declares that her greatest thanks is to the 'compulsion' to write.

Sue Wootton

Sue considers her 'national identity' finding that this subject is most often reduced to 'sound bites' but, in this blog, she suggests there is a universality about writing – perfectly shown by the poems and stories in this year's Six Pack.

Simon Hertnon

Although Simon has had publishing success with 3 books, he would like to make a mark with a work of fiction. But he wonders at the segregation between New Zealand fiction in bookstores. At this junction, the beginning of NZ Book Month, we hope the NZ section will be well frequented and hope we'll inspire Simon to discover some great new writers.

Michael Green

Michael ponders whether he'd ever want to own an E-Book – considering many factors as he ambles through his potential uses of it. Interestingly, he points out that as an author royalties on this form of publication are still very low. Are you embracing this new technology?

Nicola McCloy

If one had to suggest a book that perfectly described Auckland, Nicola reckons it'd be Under the Mountain, Maurice Gee, with brooding Lake Pupuke and the volcanic presence of Rangitoto… Wilberforces…

Lydia Monin

Lydia walks in Tom Heeney's steps 80 years later: from Gisborne, through New York and New Jersey, through his haunts during his brief visit to Dublin… She has managed to resurrect one of NZ's sporting greats and in her blogs generously shares her research of him with us. Thank you!

Andrea Jutson

Andrea chats about the process of writing, but mostly about the part which claims to be the most thrilling: yes, one might think that the finished product would bring the most euphoria but to her it simply brings up the stress of 'when the next book will be out'. Her fans will be eager, then, to read this next blog…

Peter Dowling

Global warming, rising paper costs, technological advances… issues that ensure that we look carefully at the revolution in publishing and the way that we're reading. Peter points out the likely changes that we're facing. How many of us baulk at having iTunes nowadays?

Kerre Woodham

Kerre chats about her love of flying – particularly the long-distance, more than 20 hour flights – where you can clock up a good amount of guilt-free reading time.

Karlo Mila

Karlo, in her infinite generosity, shares with us "Inside the Dead" – morbid some might assume, but in it also the celebration of Matariki which for us as NZ-ers an acknowledgement of beginnings and endings… Thank you Karlo.

Hamish Beaton

Hamish tells the story of his first job on arriving in the UK. He acquires insight into how the other half live. In character, he is off to the Alps in a stylish £7,000 ski jacket or preparing to go sailing in a lightweight blue jacket for the affordable price of £9,000!

Matt Johnson

Matt is taking strain at sounding 'flunny' and is counting the months that have passed since hearing 'choice' – ah, glorious New Zealandese!

Bridget van der Zijpp

Bridget recounts an extraordinary trip to Europe shortly after some life changing experiences. She wonders how different her writing, and her life, would have been if she'd stayed…

Liz Koh

Liz embraces the ebb of the current financial market and suggests that like gardening one should ride the seasons and embrace the dying back followed by the inevitable rejuvenation.

Janice Marriott

Launches of m/any sort are a chance for people to get together, share stories, jokes and the essential food and wine to feed the starving artist. Janice takes us, in this blog – sans canopy and chardonnay – to the launch of her book co-authored with Virginia Pawsley, Common Ground.

Corinne Davies

Corinne claims not to be a writer but a collector of writings – well bloggings – of New Zealand. I'd challenge her on that, but in the meantime kiwiology.co.nz is a rapidly growing 'bookshelf' of blogs that she's had the foresight to accumulate.

Serie Barford

Serie ponders what makes a poem a good poem, then launches into the use of clichés in writing. Her love is "… a red, red hibiscus" – great panel discussions for the next literary festival… Murray?
