New Zealand Book Month Blogs

Welcome to NZ Book Month blogs. Since the original call for entries for The 2006 Six Pack we've had contributions from writers and people from the wide range of the book industry chatting about what books mean to them, what they write or think about or sometimes just about anything!

Last year we engaged Lisa Scott to blog for us through NZ Book Month 2009. Her wit and smart observations were a treat as we celebrated the fourth NZ Book Month.

Enjoy!

Stacy Gregg

In Stacy's final blog for Book Month she anticipates the arrival of her series Pony Club Secrets in New Zealand, especially after the great reviews and fanfare received from pony-mad readers in the UK. In the meanwhile, she hangs out with Philip Treacy – milliner to the 'stars'.

Tracey Slaughter

Tracey introduces us, in her second blog, to the 'real' heroine in her story 'Note Left on a Window'.

Faith Oxenbridge

In Faith's final blog, she likens her life to an Xbox game; with some editing, perhaps not the R18 type… and maybe they'll even have time to to cover the wrinkles…

Elizabeth Smither

In Elizabeth's final blog she describes her great pleasure as a Six Pack winner, a New Zealander and most of all, for being able to give the reader the opportunity to exercise their imagination.

Jennifer Lane

In Jennifer’s final blog she describes her Six Pack publicity and explains why she’d prefer to set her story in Kent rather than Coongahoola (try saying it out loud!).

Charlotte Grimshaw

Charlotte is attending a festival in Ireland. She describes her wearisome journey: used headphones with missing foam, the confiscating toy saga, the obligatory explosives search, the drunk Paul Newman look-a-like… a frustrating, modern day plague?

Dave Armstrong

Dave misses an open goal at an ethnic soccer tournament, but scores with his argument for cultural diversity in literature.

Rachael King

Rachael describes her week: one of new beginnings and bitter-sweet endings – all in the name of literature.

Dave McArtney

In Dave’s second blog he visits the frame renovation department of London’s National Gallery and has a close encounter with a Rubens painting. This leads him to question New Zealand’s view on sustainability in art and culture.

Rebekah Palmer

Rebekah's second blog for Book Month sees her stalking a potential mentor - Keith Chapman, creator of Bob the Builder, look out! Rebekah's dreaming of a similar road to glory for Champ the Chopper and will stalk any mall to get him there...

Claire Gummer

In her final blog for Book Month, Claire must deal with the insatiable literary appetite of a six-year-old in Australia and wonders what it is that nurtures a passion for books in the young...

Sam Elworthy

In his second blog for NZ Book Month, Sam has the run-down on the Montana Awards, some top tips for conference food, and thinks Lloyd Jones has earned the right to be called simple 'a writer'.

Last Post: Cultural cringe and conference cuisine, Posts: 2, Comments: 5

Louise Wareham Leonard

In her last post for Book Month, Louise wonders what's in a label – particularly the NZ brand... why do we love ourselves to the point of not loving others? Or vice versa for that matter?

Penelope Todd

The date is drawing near when Penelope is going to Iowa for her writers residency. She's been watching documentaries on corn and is trepidatious about her imminent dietary problems, but her appetite is revived by the thought of the local literary feast coming up.

Terry Sheehan

For his final blog Terry has, as promised, a small selection of some of the best party tricks and pranks for you to try at home. Thanks Terry, we'll have fun with some of these...!

Fiona Farrell

In her second blog posting, Fiona writes of how she finds things which are unfinished to be compelling; she likes the parts of things which are not presented to the public, whether it be buildings, sketches or plays...

Andrew Johnston

In Andrew's final blog, he gives us the lowdown on the pre-Montana poetry day event last Monday – the annual reading of the 2006 Best New Zealand Poems (who read what etc) – and in a well-considered aside, brings our attention to the extraordinary achievements of Mr Bill Manhire.

James Brown

In his third post, James confesses to being a Jenny Bornholdt fan and goes through some of his favourite poems, having read Jenny's latest collection, Mrs Winter's Jump, at the weekend.

Spiro Zavos

For his final blog, Spiros basks in the kind of warm glow that only being interviewed by the best sports magazine in the world can bring, and muses on the difference between newsprint and books.

Chris Price

In her final blog, Chris looks back on her month in Tasmania, guest of the Writers Programme there, and finds that she and sea-cucumbers suddenly have much in common...
